This year we get asteroids for all occasions. In October it was Halloween asteroid.  Now it will be Christmas Eve Comet, also known as asteroid 2003 SD220. But do not worry, it will pass Earth at distance of 6.7 million miles, much greater that distance to the moon. It’s really huge asteroid, between 0.5 and 1.5 miles wide

NASA published Christmas Eve asteroid’s info on internet:

Asteroid 2003 SD220 is the first of five encounters by this object in the next 12 years when it will be close enough for a radar detection. By obtaining radar ranging measurements at each observing opportunity, it may be possible to detect non-gravitational perturbations. If so, then we can obtain an estimate of the object’s mass, information that is invaluable for understanding the object’s bulk density and internal structure.

What we learn from the Christmas Eve asteroid is very important since NASA intends to continue sending humans to Earth orbit. Those experiments may one day end up in great tragedy. Carbonaceous asteroids make up 75 percent of asteroids that we know of. They’re dark in color and, as the name implies, and contain a lot of carbon.

When asteroid will pass by Earth on Christmas Eve, you’ll need a telescope to observe it. But if you’ll miss it, no worries, it will be back again in December of 2018
