At least 16 Catholic churches across Spain will be holding services in Franco’s honor, including Basilica of the Fallen, where General Franco is buried.

One of those who will be praying for Franco at Basilica of the Fallen will be Jaime Alonso, Vice-President of the Francisco Franco Foundation.

Apart from crediting Franco with saving Spain from communists and bringing political stability in Spain Mr. Alonso claims that those who criticize Franco today owe him freedom to express their critical views about his legacy.

-Spain’s democracy has many flaws but the biggest of them all is not accepting history as it occurred. It was Franco who brought democracy, a democracy which is still very stable and enjoys a high level of public participation, said Mr. Alonso yesterday.
A luxury international hotel group has also come under fire over a planned tribute dinner in Madrid organized by Franco Foundation.
Cristina Cifuentes, Madrid’s regional premier from the conservative Popular Party, said she did not approve this event at Hotel Meliá Castilla, but she could not stop it from taking place.
Since Franco’s death several laws have been enforced by Spanish Government to remove Francoist symbols and monuments, but despite those laws many street names across Spain continue to honor Franco and the Valley of the Fallen Basilica is still a place of pilgrimage for thousands of Spaniards.
