Ciro Moccia, known in Italy as “King of Pasta” was shot in his car, possibly for his refusal to pay protection money to Mafia.

He was in his Mercedes waiting for electric gates of his house when masked assassin came from nowhere on a moped and emptied his pistol wounding Mr Moccia in his leg, prompting suspicions that the shots were a warning message rather than an attempt to kill.

In the past Mr Moccia actively campaigned against attempts by mobsters to force local businessmen to employ the mafia’s associates.

His sister, Susanna Moccia, told local media that there were many occasions when she and her brother has received anonymous threatening letters but she immediately informed police and that they had received no further threats. She also said that shots fired at her brother could have been a warning to other businesses in the area that have refused to pay up.

Mr Moccia, 45, wrote on his Facebook page:

-In my life I have always and only done the right thing and created jobs honestly. Did I make a mistake?”

It is known fact that businesses in town of Gragnano in Southern Italy, which is famous for its high-quality pasta are regularly pressured to pay protection money to Camorra Mafia, based in Naples.
