Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled that certain groups of cannabis users should be allowed to smoke marijuana. One of them is a non-profit marijuana club — Mexican Society for Responsible and Tolerant Consumption, or Smart.  This ruling means that members of Smart will be allowed to use marijuana for recreational use. And although it does not apply to every Mexican citizen, it is seen as paving the way for future challenges to the existing law.

-We won!

Said jubilant lawyer representing SMART at Mexico’s Supreme Court hearing.

He said the “historic” decision had broken the spinal cord of prohibitionists and this  legal battle had been fought for all Mexicans.

-This is not just for members of SMART. It is revolutionary break from this path that we have been on for the past decades.

Enrique Pena Nieto, Mexican president, is against legalizing any type of drugs

Enrique Pena Nieto, Mexican president, is against legalizing any type of drugs and his government rejects any relaxation of any existing anti-drugs laws. Mexico is one of worst affected countries by the worldwide war on drugs. . About 80,000 people have been killed since Felipe Calderon, President Pena’s predecessor, declared war on Mexican drug  cartels in 2006.

Recreational use of marijuana is already legal in some countries.

In December of 2013 Uruguay became the first country in the world to legalize marijuana effectively opening door to a wide-reaching discussion about legalization of this drug in other countries.
