Syrians escaping civil war atrocities tell Human Rights Watch Organization how border guards in Turkey intercepted them and pushed back into Syria, others said that they had been detained and then expelled.

Describing his attempt to cross border into Turkey, one man told Human Rights Watch that he was stopped by Turkish border guards and beat up.

-I couldn’t run because I was helping a man who had been injured in Syria and couldn’t run away. One of the guards hit me on the back of my head and in my ribs with his rifle and I fell over and started to bleed. Then another guard kicked me in the head and broke my glasses.Under international law, it is forbidden forcefully return anyone to a place where they face persecution or torture.

-Turkey has generously hosted Syrians and is entitled to control its borders, but it should not be forcing asylum seekers back to a war zone.

Said Gerry Simpson, senior refugee researcher at Human Rights Watch.

According to the United Nations, more than 2 million people have fled Syria since Russia began air strikes at the end of September.
