Russian Ministry of Defense announced that 1,623 Syrian jihadi targets, including training camps and communication hubs have been destroyed since raids began a month ago.

With ISIS heavily depleted by relentless Russian airstrikes, Washington today revealed that about 50 US commandos are about to be sent into Syria.

-There will be no boots on the ground in Syria.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said

Only elite fighters will be there to train, advise and assist.

Mr Earnest acknowledged those men would be in a dangerous situation in a part of the world where the US is also conducting airstrikes.

He said: “There’s no denying the serious risk they will be facing but they are not in a combat mission.

One senior Washington official said that a first group of commandos will go relatively soon to assess the situation and to establish strategic contacts which Syrian military groups they can best work with, including moderate Kurdish and Arab fighters.

More special operations forces would follow once they have decided what the needs are.
