USA President Barack Obama spoke at  the United Nations  just hours before meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mr. Obama denounced Mr Putin’s support for Syrian President Bashar al Assad, stating  that Mr Assad’s slaughter of his own people was “an assault on all our humanity”.

Nevertheless US President did make an overture to Mr Putin by offering to work with Russia for a “managed transition” to remove Mr Assad.

He also emphasized there could be no “return to the pre-war status quo” after the conflict, which has raged for more than four years and claimed at least 200,000 lives.

However, Mr Putin was expected to argue during his first face-to-face with Mr Obama in nearly a year that Mr Assad is a bulwark against the Islamic State.

The US President also told world leaders there must be consequences for Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

“We cannot stand by while the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation is flagrantly violated,” he said.
